My Algebra schoolwork has added a new subject on Linear Functions. It’s about finding an arithmetic sequence, which at first was somewhat hard to do. I wanted to write out how to perform this as a note.

Question Type

This type of question is like the following:

Find the 205th value from this sequence of numbers: -8, -4, 0, 4, 8, 12, …

Equation

To solve this, the equation below is used:

1st term + common difference(desired value – 1) = Answer

In the example above, the first term is -8, the common difference is positive 4 and the desired value is 205…. which turns into:

-8 + 4(205 – 1)

Following PEMDAS, this 204 * 4 -8 = 808
