My Algebra schoolwork has added a new subject on Linear Functions. It’s about finding an arithmetic sequence, which at first was somewhat hard to do. I wanted to write out how to perform this as a note.
Question Type
This type of question is like the following:
Find the 205th value from this sequence of numbers: -8, -4, 0, 4, 8, 12, …
Equation
To solve this, the equation below is used:
1st term + common difference(desired value – 1) = Answer
In the example above, the first term is -8, the common difference is positive 4 and the desired value is 205…. which turns into:
-8 + 4(205 – 1)
Following PEMDAS, this 204 * 4 -8 = 808
